Overview

Costain’s iconic Gatwick Station upgrade for Network Rail is exciting for several reasons.

Gatwick Station handles more than 20 million passengers annually through the UK’s second busiest airport. Costain’s redevelopment is doubling capacity, relieving crowding, and improving speed, and connectivity to welcome visitors from across the world when completed in 2023.

Novade’s construction management software has been implemented on the project to support Costain’s quality management objective of ‘Right First Time’.

ISSUES

    • Adopted the paper system resulting in longer process to complete tasks
    • Looking for a project management solution to speed up approvals and prevent bottlenecks to avoid onsite delays
    • Complex schemes require complex assurance processes which can be challenging to digitise

OUTCOMES

    • Streamlined and automated site processes with digital workflows
    • Significant time saved with the digitalisation and automation of over 300 Inspection and Test Plans (ITPs) created and thousands of sub-forms
    • Quality inspections conducted digitally with improved quality assurance and control
    • Managed hold points with conditional workflows
    • More than 4,480 SHE forms completed
    • Used Novade’s digital construction platform to also standardise over 1,500 (and counting) site technical queries (STQs)
    • Over 1,500 (and counting) digital Material Acceptance Records (MARs) logged to track material compliance
    • 145 quality & over 3,000 SHE observations logged and managed more efficiently
    • Over 62,400 on-site assurance photos uploaded with ease
    • Utilised custom dashboards to easily retrieve records and monitor progress through workflows
    • Leveraged the construction progress monitoring software to capture site progress and subsequently use them for reporting to senior management
